In my experience, the sooner a person can get up and moving after a major surgery, the better they will do both mentally and physically. Being sedentary for too long reduces muscle mass and the person will have a more difficult time regaining their strength. Unfortunately, the standard of practice is to provide ace bandages and shrinker socks until the wound is completely healed. The patient will need to advocate for a higher level of care.
