As summer arrives with its bright sun and warm breezes, we often look forward to outdoor activities, beach trips, and fun barbecues. But if you wear a prosthesis, the heat can create unique challenges. Skin care, comfort, and managing your prosthesis become vital during these sunny months. In this post, we’ll provide helpful tips to summer-proof your prosthesis, ensuring you can enjoy every moment of the season!
Prioritize Skin Health
Healthy skin is the foundation of comfort when using a prosthesis—especially in hot, humid conditions. Sweat, friction, and heat can increase the risk of irritation, chafing, or infection. In fact, studies show that up to 70% of prosthesis users experience skin issues, particularly during summer.
🔹 Check your skin daily for signs of redness, swelling, or discomfort. 🔹 Address any irritation early to prevent more serious problems. 🔹 Develop a consistent skincare routine that works for your needs.
Keep Your Prosthesis Clean & Dry
Sweat and moisture can build up quickly in the heat. Make it a habit to:
✅ Clean your prosthesis daily using warm water and gentle, non-abrasive soap.
✅ Thoroughly dry all parts—especially liners—before wearing again.
✅ Give your skin occasional breaks by removing the prosthesis when safe to do so.
Even just a couple of hours of rest on a hot day can reduce friction and improve skin comfort.

Use the Right Moisturizer
Moisturizing helps your skin stay strong and less prone to breakdown—but not all products are equal.
Look for:
Lightweight, breathable, non-comedogenic lotions
Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free formulas
Products with aloe vera or glycerin for cooling hydration
Apply moisturizer after cleaning your skin, focusing on high-friction areas where your limb and prosthesis meet.
Try Breathable Liners
Not all liners are created for summer. If your current one causes excessive sweating or discomfort, talk to your prosthetist about:
Moisture-wicking liners designed for breathability
Silicone liners that reduce sweat buildup
Products specifically designed for hot-weather wear
These can dramatically improve your comfort during outdoor activities.
Hydrate Often
Don’t underestimate the power of hydration! Drinking enough water is a simple but effective way to care for your body and skin.
💡 Aim for at least 8 glasses a day—more if you're active outdoors. 💡 Keep a refillable water bottle with you to stay hydrated on the go.
Proper hydration helps maintain skin elasticity and overall well-being, which is especially important when wearing a prosthesis in the heat.
Dress Smart for the Season
Your clothing choices make a big difference in regulating body temperature.
✅ Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from cotton or linen ✅ Choose light-colored fabrics to reflect sunlight ✅ Avoid rough seams or tight waistbands that may add pressure near the prosthetic area
These choices help your body stay cool and reduce the risk of heat-related discomfort.

Watch for Skin Changes
Regularly inspect the areas where your prosthesis makes contact with your skin. Look for:
New redness or irritation
Areas of swelling, rash, or soreness
Skin that feels warm to the touch
Early detection and proactive care can prevent minor issues from becoming major setbacks. If a problem doesn’t improve, reach out to your prosthetist or healthcare provider.
Take Breaks When You Need Them
It’s easy to get caught up in summer fun, but don’t ignore discomfort. Whether you're hiking, at the beach, or just out in the sun:
Rest in the shade when needed
Take pressure off your limb when possible
Cool down before discomfort turns into skin damage
Breaks aren’t signs of weakness—they’re smart ways to stay safe and comfortable.
Plan Ahead for Outdoor Activities
Before heading out, take a few extra minutes to:
Research the location (shade, restrooms, seating)
Pack extra liners or cleaning wipes
Bring an extra water bottle and snacks for energy and hydration
A little planning goes a long way toward a smooth, stress-free outing.
Enjoy the Season With Confidence
Summer should be a time of joy, exploration, and new memories. With the right care and preparation, your prosthesis can support every moment—whether you're traveling, relaxing, or staying active.
By prioritizing your skin, staying hydrated, dressing for comfort, and listening to your body, you’re setting yourself up for a happy, healthy summer.
